Rachel Malcolm: A Legacy Forged in Lightning

United Kingdom

Sixteen years of dedication, transformation and triumphs – Rachel Malcolm’s journey at Loughborough University, culminating in eight seasons with Lightning Rugby, is a story of passion and perseverance.

As the current Scotland captain prepares for a new chapter, Kukri Sports reflects on her extraordinary career and the enduring partnership that played a key role in her success.

Transitioning from Hockey to Rugby

Rachel’s path into rugby was anything but conventional. A talented hockey player, she represented Scotland at three age-grade levels before a spark ignited within her, drawing her towards rugby.

“I transitioned between the sports around 24-25, and it was a case of everything aligning at the right time,” Rachel recalls.

“My brother was a professional rugby player and his career was taking off at the time, and watching him really inspired me to give it a try.

“I loved playing hockey, but when I tried out rugby I quickly realised it was my sport, not only in terms of playing but also the values and the types of people involved.”

What followed was an incredible rise in the sport, and Rachel credits her success in her star-studded career to Loughborough’s Sport’s programme and the environment that allowed her to flourish.

“Loughborough is one of the best in the world, and that’s why I came here,” Rachel explains. “It’s where I could learn from the best.

“The opportunity to work with top practitioners, especially in strength and conditioning, allowed me to build those physical and physiological components, which then allowed me the platform to go and achieve in rugby.”

Loughborough: A platform for success

Her time with Lightning Rugby is defined not just by on-field success but by unforgettable moments, both on and off the pitch.

“I think this season gone we’ve had some really good highlights. We built a brilliant culture and environment, achieved special results, beating top four teams like Bristol Bears,” she says.

“For me, the main highlight has been the people I’ve got to meet and play alongside who have become friends for life.”

As Scotland’s captain during the 2020 Six Nations, Rachel faced one of her biggest challenges yet, but it was her time in Lightning’s programme that helped her rise to the occasion.

“The opportunities and experiences they gave me were really important to allow me to go and achieve what is probably the greatest honour in my life which was captaining and leading my country.

“I’m incredibly grateful to our Head Coach during my early years, Reece Edwards, who gave me the platform to learn, as well as Sarah Hunter, one of the best leaders in rugby as I learned so much from her.”

A trusted partner in her remarkable journey

Throughout her remarkable career, a constant presence and support network has been Kukri Sports, Loughborough’s long-standing kit supplier that has provided more than just kit.

“Kukri’s support has been brilliant,” she says. “The kit has been extremely comfortable, which is so important, particularly for women in sport to feel comfortable in what they are wearing.

“Kukri have supported the programme and different teams across the university for a long time, and I think that shows loyalty and represents the values that are very close to home for us rugby players,” she says.

Embracing the future

As Rachel prepares to move forward, she leaves behind a legacy of dedication, resilience and inspiration.

“I feel content with everything I’ve achieved here. It’s been an incredible 16 years, and I’m grateful for the opportunities and the people who have helped me to get to where I am today.”

As a true pioneer of women’s sports and rugby, her advice to aspiring athletes is simple yet profound.

“I think the biggest thing I wish I had realised early on is not to compare yourself to other people,” she explained.

“Everyone’s journey is completely unique. Celebrate your own strengths and focus on what you can bring to the table. It’s essential to enjoy the process and trust in your development.”

Rachel Malcolm’s legacy at Lightning Rugby and Loughborough Sport will continue to inspire future generations of athletes. The partnership with Kukri, which has supported Rachel and countless others on their journeys, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of loyalty, community, and high-performance support in creating champions—both on the field and beyond.

ENGLAND LACROSSE STAR TEAMS UP WITH KUKRI SPORTS AS NEW AMBASSADOR

United Kingdom

Kukri Sports is proud to announce senior England women’s Lacrosse player Liv Thomas as its first-ever lacrosse ambassador, strengthening the brand’s commitment to supporting athletes across multiple sports.

“Becoming Kukri’s first-ever lacrosse ambassador is an exciting opportunity. I not only want to represent the brand, but also help grow the game and increase awareness of lacrosse within the wider sports community.”

I have worn Kukri kit for years, through school and England Lacrosse, so they have been with me in some of my biggest moments,” she said.

Thomas’ lacrosse journey began at age 11, but it was during her time at University of Exeter – one of Kukri’s university partners – that her development as an athlete accelerated.

“Playing at Exeter was huge for my development. The regular training, leadership experience as captain and my teammates all helped me grow as an athlete,” said Thomas.

By 2022, her hard work paid off when she made her senior England debut against Puerto Rico.

Having fought through an ACL tear and hamstring injuries over an 18-month period, she is now on the verge of returning to competitive action – and taking on an exciting new role with Kukri.

Now, after months of rehab and her sights set on a full return to action, Thomas is determined to bounce back even stronger.

“I hope to get back out there in a month or so. I’m making sure my body is 100% ready and not rushing back.

“The focus is on quality rehab so I can return at my best.”

Kukri Sports is delighted to welcome Liv Thomas to its growing list of ambassadors and looks forward to working with her to promote and grow the game of lacrosse.

Starting on 20 April, the challenge will culminate at the iconic Principality Stadium on 10 May for the ‘Big Day Out’, where Bristol Bears face Bath Rugby.

The #Prem10BigWalk aims to raise awareness and vital funds for Looseheadz, rugby’s mental health charity, which is on a mission to place a mental health lead in every rugby club around the world.

Kukri is proud to support Jack (and friend Terry Gibbs) in his quest, providing them with high-performance kit featuring a QR code linking directly to information on how supporters can donate.

Looking ahead to his next challenge, which no one has completed before, Jack said, “I wanted to take it on because I want to test myself physically and mentally while helping Looseheadz save lives.”

“The rugby community has always been an incredible place for sport, socialising and opening up to each other. This is my way of giving back.”

In preparation for the 621-mile challenge, Jack has been following a tailored training plan, including strength and cardio workouts designed by his personal trainer.

“I’m relishing the challenge of testing my resilience,” he said. “As tough as it will be, I’m excited to connect with rugby clubs and players throughout the journey and create content to raise awareness.”

“Looseheadz’s work at grassroots level has been incredible, and I want to contribute to their cause.

KIERAN MOLLOY REFLECTS ON UNDEFEATED YEAR AND SETS SIGHTS ON DOMINANT 2025

United Kingdom

2024 has been a landmark year for rising boxing star Kieran Molloy, marked by thrilling victories and his continued rise in the boxing world.

The Irish-born boxer and Kukri Sports ambassador capped off the year in style, extending his undefeated professional record to a flawless ten wins from as many fights.

His latest triumph marked his third victory this year, following a commanding performance against Matthew King in June and a hard-fought win over Sergio Garcia in April.

Reflecting on his milestone, Molloy commented:

“My main aim is to win however it comes, but I’ve been performing well, adjusting to each style that I’m faced with.

“It’s all about stepping up the opposition and chasing titles.”

A Year of Growth & Determination

Molloy’s path to this record hasn’t been without challenges. This year, he made the bold decision to switch gyms and environment, a move that proved instrumental in elevating his fight style and approach.

“I have adjusted to the new training environment quite well. I’ve been boxing since I was five years old, so I’ve had a lot of different coaches over the years, but I’m training alongside people who are on exciting journeys as well.”

When asked what has fuelled his success this year, Molloy explained:

“I think a lot of it is attention to detail and being obsessed with what you do.

“There is a structure and a plan behind everything we do, but a lot of it comes down to dedication and training. You have to show up every day, even when you don’t feel like it, always trying to improve yourself.”

Facing Challenges in the Ring

Among his standout moments this year, Molloy points to his April fight against Sergio Garcia as a defining test of his resilience.

“It was the first time in my professional career I’ve been dealt with a bit of adversity. I was on the canvas in the sixth round and answered some questions of myself.

“I learned a lot from that fight, but we’ve been there, we’ve dealt with it, and I know if it does happen again, that I have to come out of it.”

Support from Kukri Sports

The 26-year-old’s exciting journey has been supported in his partnership with Kukri, whose sportswear has played a vital role in his preparation and performance.

“It’s been brilliant having access to Kukri sportswear for training and fights. I’ve never been stuck for something to throw on, but not only that, it allows me to train full time as well.

“Their support has really helped me to fully focus on my career, and on fight nights, the team is always looking slick with the Kukri merchandise – it looks really nice too.”

Dreaming Big Ahead of 2025

Looking ahead, Molloy has ambitious plans for the coming year, setting his sights on international belts and climbing the global rankings.

“I’d like to fight in London, maybe St. Patrick’s weekend in March. We’re in talks with GBM to see if we can get that one over the line, which would be unreal.”

With his sights firmly set on a blockbuster 2025, Molloy is ready to make his mark on the world stage:

“We’re planning on a massive 2025, so it’s going to be by far the biggest year yet. We’re going to keep growing on that ladder and chase those titles—watch this space.”
