At Kukri Sports, our mission has always been to deliver high-quality, performance-driven sportswear that not only looks great but stands the test of time. But even the best kit can wear out faster than it should if not looked after properly. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we’re encouraging athletes, teams, and supporters to join us in taking small but significant steps to extend the life of their sportswear.
Why does it matter? Extending the lifespan of your kit by just nine months can reduce its environmental impact by up to 30%. That means less waste, lower carbon emissions, and fewer resources used in production. With that in mind, here are our top tips for making your sportswear last longer – for the planet and your pocket.
1. Wash Smarter, Not Harder
- Cold is Cool: Wash sportswear in cold water (30°C or below) to prevent fabric damage and reduce energy use.
- Skip the Spin: Aggressive spin cycles can stretch and wear fibres. Use a gentler setting to preserve performance fabrics.
- Inside Out: Turn garments inside out before washing to protect colour, logos and printed graphics.
2. Use the Right Detergent
Choose mild, eco-friendly detergents and avoid fabric softeners, which can break down technical fabrics and reduce breathability and moisture-wicking properties.
3. Air Dry Whenever Possible
Tumble drying is harsh on high-performance fabrics and consumes unnecessary energy. Hang your gear to dry naturally – it’s better for the environment and helps retain shape and elasticity.
4. Don’t Over-wash
It can be tempting to wash kit after every use, but sometimes a simple air-out will do. Over-washing wears garments faster and consumes water and energy unnecessarily.
5. Store with Care
Keep sportswear in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and fabric breakdown. Avoid hanging heavy items that could stretch the shoulders – folding is often best.
At Kukri, we’re proud to supply teams and individuals around the world with kit that performs at the highest level – and now we’re asking everyone in our community to think more sustainably about how they wear and care for their sportswear.
Together, we can reduce our environmental and build a more sustainable future for sport.
