Glentoran vs. Linfield - a potted history of 'Belclasico!'

When Glentoran take to the field against bitter rivals Linfield tonight in front of the Sky Sports cameras, it will be the latest instalment of one of the fiercest derbies in British football.

The two teams are known as the 'Big Two' of football in Northern Ireland, as they have traditionally dominated the game locally since the demise of Belfast Celtic. The teams traditionally meet on Boxing Day each year, and these intense matches regularly attract the largest attendance of the Irish League season.

The Glens and Linfield are two teams of immense pride and history. They were founder members of the Irish League back in 1890 and are two of only four clubs who have retained membership of the League ever since its formation. Linfield are currently celebrating the 125th anniversary of the club's foundation - a landmark achieved by the Glens back in 2007. Indeed, these two teams contested the first ever game at Linfield's famous Windsor Park home - also the home of the Northern Irish national team - back on September 2nd, 1905.

These two titans of Irish football have contested the Irish Cup Final 14 times, the Irish League Cup 8 times, and the County Antrim Sheild 17 times - and if you don't believe how intense it can be, we urge you to check out the action in their latest meeting, tonight at 7:30pm on Sky Sports 1!
