A record crowd of nearly 10,000 rugby fans, including Welsh International Alun-Wyn Jones and Jamie Roberts, travelled to Cardiff Arms Park to watch the Kukri clad sides of Swansea and Cardiff Univeristies compete for the 2009 Welsh Varsity Match trophy...and what a game!
Cardiff took the title 9-6 althought it was Swansea who opened through their No 10 Robert Evans thanks to a penalty after 20 minutes. 25 minutes later and he was at it again - taking them to 0-6.
Cardiff began to chip and chase the ball downfield and set up a well-worked passage of play that suggested a growing confidence...but were unable to break Swansea's defences and the score remained 0-6 to Swansea at half-time.
However, the relentless pressure from Cardiff soon began to tell. A penalty against Swansea was converted by Cardiff centre Ieuan Coombes to take the score to 3-6, then on 60 minutes Cameron Pimlow levelled the score and then just with minutes remaining another drop goal from man-of-the-match Pimlow put Cardiff ahead 9-6.
Swansea's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard B Davies, commented: "This was a very tense, close game but we can all be proud of the superb performance that Swansea put in. The team really did give it their all. They held back the Cardiff attack and did not concede a single try, which is remarkable given the sustained pressure they were under."
Congratulations to Cardiff Captain, Aaron Fowler, who now has the playing record of playing in Four Varsity matches - winning 3 from 4! Well done from everyone at KUKRI!
